The care of your leather, suede or sheepskin
|
General Hints
Never cover your leather, suede or sheepskin garment with a plastic bag.
It should be kept hanging, uncrushed in a well-ventilated wardrobe and may be covered with tissue or a lightweight cotton sheet.
Never treat your real leather garment as a raincoat.
Heavy soaking will make the skin stiff and appear creased and may cause colour loss.
If you should get caught in the rain or snow, put the coat on a well-shaped hanger and let it dry at normal room temperature, NEVER near a fire or direct source off heat.
When wearing a ¾ or full length coat, always undo the lower fastenings before sitting down, to avoid tearing the garment or pulling off the fastening.
Leather and leather-finished lamb or sheepskin
Light surface marks can usually be removed with a slightly damp cloth or use of a proprietary cleaner such as Leather Groom.
However, in every case please test the inside facing of the garment first.
Wearing of handbags over shoulders or arms can eventually wear away the surface.
Many leathers nowadays are dyed with new processes to let the natural markings of the skins show through. This is most noticeable with ANILINE, NUBUCK and DISTRESSED leathers.
This is not a fault, but allows the natural beauty of the skin to show through (comparable to the natural grain or knots in wood). They are more absorbent than other leathers and we recommend spraying them with ‘Suedeguard’ or ‘Scotchguard’ to avoid spotting or staining.
A process known as ‘Stone-washing’ is often used to produce the distressed finish.
This involves revolving the skins in a drum with small pebbles to give
a ‘worn effect’ similar to the old World War flying jackets, i.e. an uneven colouring with small blemishes in the skin.
This process is also designed to continue ‘ageing’ with wear
Waxy skipper and waxy nubuck leathers
The waxy surface of these leathers gives them an extra durable, semi-waterproof finish.
However, the wax will slowly rub off and it is not advisable to wear them over, or store them in contact with other light colour clothing.
Synthetic leather, synthetic suede or synthetic sheepskin
These man-made fibres are much lower in price than real leather, but not as hard wearing.
The surface can sometimes crack or peel away, especially around the neck or wrists, or if allowed to get too wet.
Suede and sueded sheepskin
To help avoid bad marks or spotting from the rain, we recommend spraying with ‘Suedeguard’ or ‘Scotchguard’.
This also makes it easier to remove marks when the garment is eventually cleaned.
When new, suede often sheds fine particles of ‘nap’ or ‘dust’. This becomes less noticeable with wear, but for this reason it is advisable to wear it with colours that will tone.
You should also avoid the type of cloth car seat that ‘clings’ and may ‘pull’ fibres from the suede. We suggest that you put a woollen travel rug or cotton sheet over the car seat.

WARNING!
Due to the falling value of the pound, all prices are due to rise as most sheepskin and leather skins come from overseas.
Although Higgs Leathers carries large stocks, as we sell out of various styles the new stock is likely to be at higher prices.
Please order as soon as possible to avoid the inevitable price increases.
